Three decades, three supercars. It’s 30 years since Porsche unveiled the 959 at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show. We chart the history of the 959 and its supercar successors, the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder.

PORSCHE 959

This publicity shot may scream ‘1980s’, but the 959 was well ahead of its time. Electronically adjustable suspension, ‘zero lift’ aerodynamics, weight-saving Kevlar body panels and adaptive four-wheel drive were pretty advanced for 1985.

PORSCHE 911 CARRERA RSR 2.1

However, the Porsche supercar story arguably begins with this car: the 911 Carrera RSR 2.1 racer. The first turbocharged 911, it competed in the 1974 24 Hours of Le Mans.

PORSCHE 911 TURBO

It didn’t take Porsche long to transfer turbo technology to the road-going 911. The iconic Turbo boasted wide wheelarches, a ‘whale-tail’ rear spoiler and a 260hp flat-six engine.

For many years, the 911 Turbo was Porsche’s flagship sports car. But in 1981, work began on a heavily-modified four-wheel-drive 911 to compete in Group B rallying.

Sadly, a number of high-profile crashes brought an end to Group B rallying before the 959 could race. The prototype remains on display in the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart.

No, not a badly-bodged Porsche replica, but one of the original 959 development cars – also on display at the Porsche Museum.

The first 959s were delivered to customers in 1987. Despite costing a stratospheric £145,000, Porsche would lose money on every car built.

The 911 Turbo was notorious for its on/off power delivery. Porsche solved that problem with sequential twin turbochargers for the 959. This example belongs to fashion supremo, Ralph Lauren.

One major similarity with the 911 was, of course, the 959’s rear engine. This cutaway drawing shows its advanced PSK four-wheel-drive system, which could juggle torque between the front and rear wheels.

Porsche enlisted the talents of German racing driver, Walter Röhrl, to develop the 959’s handling. Röhrl had already won the World Rally Championship twice in the early 1980s.
FERRARI F40

The 959 may have been the world’s most advanced supercar, but it wasn’t the fastest. That honour went to its arch-rival, the Ferrari F40.

While the outrageous F40 looked like a Group C racer for the road, the 959 resembled a slightly sleeker 911. It even had a pair of (child-sized) rear seats.

There were no concept-car flourishes inside the 959 – just a sensible, 911-based dashboard and typically Germanic build quality. A column stalk allowed the driver to tell the 4WD system about the weather conditions: dry, wet, snow or gravel.

PORSCHE 959 S
The 959 was available in two specifications: Komfort and S (Sport). S models, as seen here, had no air conditioning or rear seats, coil springs rather than air suspension, and a rollcage.

It didn’t race in Group B, but the 959 did achieve success in the gruelling Paris-Dakar rally. Porsche finished first and second in 1986.

Production of the 959 ended in 1989, and it would be 15 years before Porsche launched another supercar: the Carrera GT.
PORSCHE CARRERA GT
Production of the 959 ended in 1989, and it would be 15 years before Porsche launched another supercar: the Carrera GT. Fortunately, the 2004 Carrera GT was worth the wait. It’s widely considered to be one of the finest sports cars ever made.

The Carrera GT was powered by a mid-mounted V10 engine that had its roots in Formula One racing. All 612hp is fed through the rear wheels.

No flappy-paddle gearboxes here; the Carrera GT has on old-fashioned six-speed manual – and is all the better for it. The beechwood gearknob is a nod to Porsche’s 917 racing cars.
There’s nothing old-fashioned about the GT’s performance, though. It hits 60mph in 3.8 seconds and doesn’t stop until 205mph.
The Porsche’s engine cradle and passenger cell are made from lightweight carbonfibre. Its huge disc brakes are ceramic composite – which is very resistant to fade at high temperatures.
Appearances can be deceptive. The Ruf CTR3 is a Porsche-based, low-volume sports car with a 911 engine and styling that apes the Carrera GT.
Porsche planned to build 1,500 Carrera GTs. However, changes to airbag rules meant only 1,270 had left the factory when production ended in 2006.
Porsche waited just four years before revealing its next supercar – the 918 Spyder – at the 2010 Frankfurt Motor Show.
Production of the 918 Spyder didn’t start until late 2013. Costing £625,000, all 918 examples built have now been sold.
The 918 arguably crosses the divide between supercar and hypercar. It hits 60mph in 2.5 seconds and 190mph in less than 20 seconds. Top speed is 210mph.
